Bremen save best until last

Group C: Werder Bremen crushed Panathinaikos 5-1 to qualify for the knockout phase on goal difference. Bremen finished second behind winners Barcelona, who defeated Udinese 2-0 in Italy.

A Johan Micoud penalty, a double strike from Paraguayan Nelson Valdez, a sharp run and shot by Miroslav Klose and an injury-time effort from Torsten Frings ensured the German side's victory.

The Germans made a dream start. Panathinaikos keeper Mario Galinovic brought down Klose inside a minute and Micoud slotted in his penalty.

But the biggest cheers came when Barcelona's two late goals were flashed up on the stadium screen. Sergio Ezquerro put Spanish champions Barcelona ahead in the 85th minute and then set up substitute Andres Iniesta to score their second goal in the final minute. Although Barca were without Ronaldinho, they created the best chances - Ludovic Guily hitting the bar and the post.
