Madam, - I have been a fan of Irish soccer for many years and I remember the Irish team being booed off the Lansdowne Road pitch more than once in the early 1980s after dismal performances against some of Europe's featherweights.

Fans who pay up to €35 to see their national team are entitled to express their view on what they get for their money. What better way to do this than en masse in front of manager and team?

Congratulations to Mick McCarthy for taking the team this far. Unfortunately, as he has clearly shown, he can take them no further. The manager said he would quit when he felt the fans no longer wanted him. They spoke at last Wednesday week. - Yours, etc.,
