Sir, - After reading Fiona Murdoch's article on the plight of a mother and her four children (E&L, May 21st), I thought she was writing about some underdeveloped country, only to realise that her piece was about the capital of Ireland.

The Dickensian conditions endured by the family would shame any society and if we were to ask refugees to live in such conditions we would be accused of racism. Therefore is it not time to give our own refugees priority? - Yours, etc.,
