Sir, - A friend and I had the dubious pleasure of spending last weekend in Dublin. Our car journey from the Irish Ferries berth at Dublin Port to our hotel on the Naas Road took just over two hours - that's longer than it had taken the Dublin Swift to cross the Irish Sea!

All the while, as we inched along admiring the array of roadworks, our windscreen and wheels were assailed by blown-away referendum posters (to be fair, about equally pro and anti), adding to the entertainment. And it was the same throughout the entire weekend, with Ireland's capital city resembling a neglected building site where little moved besides airborne posters.

Will we be back for the St Patrick's festivities? Will we my Erse! - Yours, etc.,
