Madam, - I commend Marc Coleman for highlighting the issue of stamp duty on house purchases (Business This Week, February 24th).
I know from my own friends and family that most of the people being affected by this inequitable tax are ordinary people. They are young couples who have already struggled to get on the property ladder at all and now want to buy a modest house, families who need more room because they have children, people have to move for work or business reasons.
I would urge the Government to review stamp duty and its effects urgently. Firstly it should establish a realistic threshold below which owner-occupiers will not be liable for any stamp duty (say the national average house price). Secondly, it should lower the rates of duty. - Yours, etc,
