Madam, - Quentin Fottrell's amusing article in your issue of May 13th refers to Dr Ian Paisley throwing a snowball at Seán Lemass in Belfast in 1965.

As the only one from Dublin who accompanied both Seán Lemass and Jack Lynch on their first visits to Stormont I wish to put on record the true story of the Paisley snowballing incident.

There was no snow on the ground on the occasion of the Lemass visit in January, 1965, nor was Dr Paisley present. It was when Jack Lynch visited Terence O'Neill two years later that the erratic snowballing took place near the Carson monument, accompanied by the shouts of "No Pope Here"!

Jack Lynch asked me softly: "Which of us does he think is the Pope?" - Yours, etc,
