Madam, - I write in warm support of Muredach Doherty's bold and imaginative suggestion for linking the Luas lines in the centre of Dublin (Nov 4th). I have always been of the opinion that the major shortcoming of our old tramway system was the routing of it around, rather than through, Trinity by way of College Green.

I think, however, that he does less than justice to the far-seeing efforts of Trinity College in recent years to move away from any notion of "cloistered peace" (surely an outdated concept in a well-managed modern university).

We have skate boarding facilities at our Nassau Street entrance and in the forecourt of the Berkeley Library that are the envy of Europe. Our unrivalled car-parking arrangements in Front Square and New Square provide not only for cars in profusion (a goodly number of which are in those socially exclusive 04 and 03 categories) but pleasingly also for a variety of jungle jeeps and vans and even lorries.

We welcome on a daily basis groups of 30 and upwards who come to gaze in awe upon our ancient architectural glories, and nothing gives us more pleasure than to watch them in turn disporting themselves on our well-tended lawns.

I look forward to the consolidation of these solid achievements in the restructuring of our departments (a process now happily well under way). - Yours, etc.,
