RISING PRICES

Sir, - Along with many economic and political commentators, Dan McLaughlin (April 19th) has identified the increase in income while conveniently ignoring the fact that costs have increased even more.

Over 10 years the price of a basic house has gone from €40,000 to €160,000 and rents have increased even more as supply has been squeezed. The increase in basic incomes has not kept pace.

His argument that the Government is not favouring the better-off, when it is literally giving them cash under the SSIA schemes, defies all logic. - Yours, etc.,
