Regulation of legal services

Sir, – Further to Charles Lysaght's very fair analysis ("Legal services Bill unlikely to reduce fees", Opinion & Analysis, September 30th), in reply to a parliamentary question, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald confirmed that 18 to 20 staff currently employed by the Law Society to operate that body's complaints system are to be automatically recruited to staff a new independent State regulatory authority. Follow-up questions to Brendan Howlin's Department of Public Expenditure and Reform shed no light on this unique method of recruitment.

One wonders how these recruitment plans respect the public interest. – Yours, etc,

EDWARD STEVENSON,

Lusk, Co Dublin.
