Sir, – Please excuse my being pedantic but Arturo Pomar, as referred to in the chess column (July 3rd) was even younger that stated. Rather than being 14 when he drew with Alekhine in the 1944 tournament in Gijon, he was in fact not quite 13, being born on September 1st, 1931. The tournament in Gijon took place in July 1944.
Thus his draw at the age of 12 with Alekhine is even more “prodigious”!
