Madam, - Your Editorial "Tensions in Pakistan" (March 23rd) was rather confusing. The concerns expressed are misplaced and the insinuations are misleading.

The judicial reference against Mr Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry is a constitutional and legal matter which is being pursed in accordance with the constitutional and legal provisions of Pakistan.

Pakistan has a functioning federal democratic system - federal and provincial assemblies are in place. They are set to complete their normal term of office for the first time. All fundamental freedoms are jealously guarded by a vibrant society led by a fully free media. The political parties are busy preparing for general elections expected this year.

One fails to understand your use of the term "macho" for the leadership in Pakistan. The government in Pakistan is stable and in full control and does not need to take measures to divert attention of the masses. Such insinuations can best be described as naive. - Yours, etc,
