Sir, - The loss of interest in politics by the people of this country can be readily understood after reading Sean Mac Connell's report about Tom Parlon's decision to run for a Dáil seat in the next election (The Irish Times, January 15th). Mr Parlon cannot make up his mind between the PDs and Fine Gael, two parties currently on opposing sides of the house. Both parties would be happy to have him in their ranks.
This suggests that for the candidate there little to choose between the parties and for the parties the "profile" of the candidate is paramount, leading to votes. Where has the passion in politics gone and what does opposition mean any more?
There are too many grey suits entering and exiting the Dáil. Hence the attitude, "Sure, what's the point in voting? They're all the same." - Yours,etc.,

Sir, - In an age of political cynicism, I am heartened to see that the outgoing IFA leader, Tom Parlon, is so moved by his beliefs that he will seek election to the Dáil to promote them.
Sadly, Mr Parlon seems unsure precisely what these beliefs are. He has decided to run, but not decided which party to run for, or even whether he wants to keep the current Government, or get the bar stewards out. - Yours, etc.,
