Madam, - Am I the only person who believes that the Olympics are an enormous waste of time and money? The main beneficiaries seem to be a few select athletes, building contractors and television networks. The continual inclusion of obscure "sports", the drug scandals and the vast range of other high-profile sporting events throughout the year has reduced public interest, as shown by the very poor attendances.
Previous hosts can testify to some of the infrastructure being vastly underused after the whole circus has moved on, yet millions are spent on its provision.
And all this profligate waste is taking place against the background of the humanitarian crisis in the Sudan. - Yours, etc.,
