Madam, - So the spire is now to be named "The Spire of Dublin". Is that the best we can do for a name?

This spire will probably become a symbol of Ireland, yet the name stands for nothing. Would the British, the French or the Germans erect the tallest monument in the very centre of their capital cities and simply call it the Spire or the Pillar or the Tower? They would surely call the monument after some great figure of event from their past. It would have some meaning for them.

There's no sense of Irish identity and certainly no imagination in "The Spire of Dublin". - Yours, etc.,
