Negotiations on forming a government

Sir, – It is absolutely essential that any agreement between the “two big parties” on the formation of a government should be written down and made available to all.

When we are faced with the next general election, be it in weeks or months, have no doubt but that the schoolyard antics of all parties and Independents, whether they are participating or not in trying to form a government, will inevitably include spin and blame as to who caused the election in the first place. A written agreement now would hopefully restrict the potential for such spin and blame but, more importantly, would give us, the voters, a basis on which we can make an informed judgement as to who may have been playing games, who made the more genuine efforts, and who, if any, were putting the welfare of the country and its citizens before personal, local and party interests. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL GANNON,

Kilkenny.
