Minister's `Apology'

Sir, - Very many thanks to Mr Willie O'Dea. His vitriolic diatribe in the Dail reminded me why I never want to be represented in government by a party which considers Mr O'Dea a ministerial star in its crown.

If this is Mr O'Dea's idea of an apology to the people of Ireland for being caught out playing both sides of the taxi deregulation pitch, I feel sorry for us all. What happened to decent debate within our Dail chambers? If he has reservations about deregulation of taxi drivers, why didn't he discuss this in his Dail answer? Instead, he stooped to a disgusting slagging-off of the opposition.

And by the way, I still don't understand the logic of "if I'd known that I was being taped, I wouldn't have said what I said." Does this mean it's OK for a Minister to say things behind his Government colleagues' backs just so long as they don't find out?

I am now a confirmed Fine Gael voter for the next general election. - Yours, etc.,
