Sir, – In response to the editorial (October 9th) on the potential restoration of consultants' pay, you commented that the taxpayer contributes substantially to the medical education of those who emigrate.
While this is true for the majority, one-third of current Irish medical graduates have paid in the region of €60,000 in fees for graduate entry medicine. Many owe up to €100,000 on graduation, the repayments of which currently cost more than 50 per cent of my take-home pay each month.
This hardship is frequently ignored by the media and consequently few are aware of it. – Yours, etc,
