Local property tax

Sir, – I cannot help but be surprised in all this fuss about water that nobody is referring to what I consider to be the most insidious of government charges, the local property tax (LPT). I think this is the one that we should see more focus on.

I say it is insidious because it is based on a notional market value of one’s house. Just because “the market” somehow puts a particular value on my house, it does not follow that that value matters a whit in regard to the fairness or equity of the LPT charge.

The LPT has to be paid out of one’s income but the so-called house “market value” does not contribute one cent to my income from which to pay the tax. – Yours, etc,
