DAVID REDDY,
Sir, - Having read Brendan McWilliams's wise words of warning about the deadly dangers of lightning strikes and the sensible precautions to take (Weather Eye, June 5th), I am left wondering why we are putting up a 150-metre high stainless steel spike in O'Connell Street, slap-bang in the middle of a densely trafficked area.
Do the authorities intend to protect the public by closing off the immediate area every time lightning storms are forecast - or are we to use our own common sense and vacate the area voluntarily? Has this very real danger been considered at all by Dublin City Council or are we going to wait for a tragic event to focus our thoughts on the matter?
- Yours, etc.,
