A chara, – Doireann Ní Bhriain (Letters, March 10th) bemoans the apparent lack of interest in European languages among Irish students and graduates. This raises important questions regarding the teaching of European languages at second level, where the emphasis on teaching to the test – the Leaving Certificate – seems to be detracting from the ability to hold a conversation.
