Sir, - While reading your excellent articles on alcohol abuse I was struck by the sheer hypocrisy of our politics and attitudes.

Last year, when some pubs attempted to raise the prices of alcohol, a Government Minister stepped in to "defend the drinkers" and price restraints were imposed. But when a drinks company attempts to offer alcohol at cut prices as a promotion, no Minister steps in to "defend the drinker". No minimum price control is imposed.

Last year we saw many an article devoted to expressing an outrage at "Promotional" events which target younger drinkers, yet still they go on. - Yours, etc.,
