Increase intrain fares

Madam, - I write in connection with the proposed rise in train fares

Madam, - I write in connection with the proposed rise in train fares. The trains serving the Drogheda route have improved tremendously, but the morning and evening commuter trains are bursting at the seams. Would it not be a good idea for Iarnród Éireann to introduce a low fare at off-peak times?

I recall that they did this in the past, and it was a great success, giving people who had to go to Dublin a much better option than driving.

This would work particularly well for people on flexi-time also and, in the run-up to Christmas, it would be a great boost to both shoppers and trade.

I have observed practically empty nine-carriage trains travelling up and down this route from 11am to 4pm. A touch of the Ryanair "bums on seats" approach would be beneficial.

I think Iarnród Éireann does an excellent job, but a little common sense would help all involved. - Yours, etc,
