Madam, - I agree with Brian Maye (An Irishman's Diary, February 9th) that W.T. Cosgrave deserves recognition as the founder of the modern Irish State.

The late Jim Mitchell, TD, former Lord Mayor of Dublin (among others) pressed for the placing of a plaque to mark the spot in James's Street (at Kenny's Pub) where W.T. Cosgrave was brought up. Sadly, this plaque was taken down while renovations were going on.

I call on Dublin City Council to give back this small honour to a founding father of the State. The plaque could make up part of a heritage trail which could include Kilmainham Jail and Goldenbridge Cemetery, where he is buried. - Yours, etc.,

Cllr CATHERINE BYRNE, (Fine Gael), Bulfin Road, Dublin 8.
