Great Krapps

Sir, – In the list of notable interpreters of the name part in Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape (Great Krapps, March 16th) there is one important omission, that of the late David Kelly who was the first to play the part in this country and only the second in the world. This was in a summer season in 1959 in the Players Theatre, TCD, directed by Louis Lentin.

Kelly was probably too young for the role, yet it was remarkable to observe how he matured into the character in many mesmeric revivals since that time, including a comparatively recent one at the Gate Theatre, Dublin. – Yours, etc,

CHRISTOPHER

FITZ-SIMON,
