Sir, – It is good to note that our capital city is being properly policed, per Conor Lally's piece ("A night of policing in Dublin," November 20th). But why give this initiative – Operation Citizen – a special title?
It is as though having a strong Garda presence on the streets was something unique; rather than being what I would have thought was the obvious basic role of any policing force.
And indeed, this special operational status which began on October 22nd last, seems set to be scaled back come the new year.
Like the puppy, safety on our streets through proper policing, should not be just for Christmas. – Yours, etc,
