Surely forgiveness is preceded by confession, restitution (say Kinsealy donated to the State to provide accommodation and therapy for runaway and deprived children) and penance (perhaps the ignominy of revelation and the ensuing fall from national grace could, in the foregoing circumstances, be sufficient).
