Employment and rent

Sir, – Ita Brennan's letter (January 23rd) has left me scratching my head.

If Ms Brennan had taken on a full-time employee at minimum wage from January 2016, she would be paying this employee €9.25 per hour for 37.5 hours per week (standard full-time working week). This a gross weekly payment of €346.87. As this is the minimum wage, this employee’s tax liability is just over €600 per year, leaving the employee take-home pay per week of €335.17. A far cry from the €200 per week that Ms Brennan alludes to. – Yours, etc,
