DONAL DE ROISTE CASE

DIARMUID BREATHNACH,

DIARMUID BREATHNACH,

Sir, - I found Don Mullan's news feature on the Dónal de Róiste case (June 29th) disquieting, with its suggestion of injustice on behalf of servants of the State and, perhaps, its institutions. You published a muted Editorial and about three letters, but the absence of published reaction by readers and other media since then is also disquieting. I know from conversations that many readers were indeed disturbed: 1967-68 may be a long time ago, but the two citizens concerned are still suffering.

Mr Mullan prefaced his feature with a quote from Ella Wheeler Wilcox: "To sin by silence when we should protest makes cowards out of men." Guilt about my own silence has prompted me to pen this letter. - Yours, etc.,

Diarmuid Breathnach,
