Madam, - The long-standing reluctance of the politically correct to question the anachronistic and unsustainable State-dependent itinerant lifestyle has resulted in the fiasco at Dunsink Lane.

Council representatives, An Garda Síochána and members of the "settled" community have long been intimidated from achieving the restoration of a lawful, peaceful and sustainable environment at that and other inter-county locations where itinerant encampments have been formed.

On the day after Dublin city and Fingal councils had agreed to dismantle the newly erected and necessary barrier at Dunsink Lane, on foot of days of rioting by itinerants, the BBC featured similar problems encountered in rural villages throughout England, where Irish itinerants are besmirching the good name of this State by laying waste to huge swathes of privately and publicly owned land and where new laws will have to be drafted to deal with the problem.

The supremely incisive filleting and dissecting by Kevin Myers (An Irishman's Diary, October 13th) of the lifestyle choice of itinerants - a lifestyle which will continue to compound their poor education and health of coming generations - should encourage our society to re-evaluate the special constitutional status that has been enjoyed by that section of the population for the past decade. - Yours, etc.,
