DISAPPEARING LETTERS

JOE MCDONAGH,

JOE MCDONAGH,

Sir, - I was very amused to read the article by Alison Healy - "A postal problem that needs to be addressed" (June 8th, 2002).

I was, however, enraged by the implication of some of the remarks by Ms. Anna McHugh.

In my experience there appears to be a "black hole" into which letters go, never to be seen again - and it's not just a few.

For the last two years, letters posted by me have been disappearing randomly into this "black hole" at the rate of at least 4%.

Out of a sample of 56 letters sent out each month, anything from two to eight have failed to be delivered each month. This is despite the fact that there is a proper, typed label, from the same database used each month. It's not that same letter that keeps disappearing. In fact no letter has failed to be delivered more than once. But it gets worse. The letters disappearing into this "black hole" includes registered letters - at least two in the past 12 months.

The last straw was this week when two bills, one from An Post and one from Eircom, were delivered not to Mr Joe McDonagh, Hon. Secretary, Abbeyquarter Community Centre, c/o 6 Chapel Street, Sligo, as addressed, but to the Abbeyquarter Community Centre. which is in Cranmore. Do An Post think that the fact that I want the bills sent to c/o 6 Chapel Street, is just a joke? - Yours, etc.,

JOE MCDONAGH,

Chapel Street,

Sligo.
