David Drumm and the US legal system

Sir, – Fintan O'Toole bemoans the incarceration on remand of David Drumm in the United States ("David Drumm is as entitled to bail as anyone else", Opinion & Analysis, January 13th).

He also states of Mr Drumm that “it is obvious his whole aim is to stay in the US”. If it is the case that Mr Drumm’s aim is to remain in the US, then surely he must accept the laws and the structures of the judicial system in that country. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – David Drumm has every right to a fair trial in Ireland. And the people of this country have a corresponding right to see those suspected of breaking the law being brought to trial to face their accusers. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Well said, Fintan O’Toole. Everybody is entitled to fair process and fair treatment, and that does not seem to be the case here. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Surely Fintan O’Toole could acknowledge that David Drumm is exactly where he is now as a consequence of his own actions and not, as suggested, by a vindictive conspiracy between officials on both sides of the Atlantic. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Does Fintan O Toole check his articles for logic before he lets fly? David Drumm has chosen the US as his home and all that goes with it, including its legal system. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole complains that there is no evidence that Mr Drumm is planning to flee. Mr Drumm has form in this department. He fled Ireland in 2008 with debts of €10.5 million.

As to the reliability of Mr Drumm to abide by any conditions of bail or house arrest, I refer your columnist to the 122-page report delivered by US bankruptcy court judge Frank Bailey, in which the language used by the judge was uncompromising and unambiguous.

For example, the judge said that Mr Drumm was “not remotely credible” and was “adept in testimony intended to deflect, misdirect, avoid, fabricate”.

The judge went on to say that Mr Drumm had been shown “to have virtually no regard for the truth”. – Yours, etc,
