Cross-Border survey

Sir, – From your report (November 5th) on the RTÉ and BBC NI survey of attitudes North and South of the Border, we learn that while 66 per cent of people in the South aspire to a united Ireland in their lifetime, only 36 per cent actually want it to happen now. It seems we have a new splinter republican movement that aspires to unity, just not yet.

However, it is not credible that these Augustinian republicans would ever want a united Ireland within anybody’s lifetime as, unlike St Augustine, they will not find a persuasive argument that would convince them to make any of the necessary sacrifices involved. – Yours, etc,
