CLASSICS AT QUEEN'S

PATRICIA LYLE,

PATRICIA LYLE,

Sir, - On behalf of the patrons, members and committee of the Irish-Hellenic Society, I wish to protest most strongly at the decision to close the Classics Department at Queen's University.

Our knowledge of the ancient world comes from the inscriptions and documents that have survived the centuries and which continue to be discovered. In all branches of the sciences the basic concepts originate in Greece. To know the future, we must look to the past. If the teaching of Greek and Latin is stopped, who will there be translate the past for us? - Yours, etc.,

PATRICIA LYLE, Honorary President, Irish Hellenic Society, Ulverton Road, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
