Breastfeeding and the media

Sir, – It's the same every year. World Breastfeeding Week becomes "World Breastfeeding Bashing Week". Some breastfeeding mothers just want to celebrate something they are proud of, and perhaps provide information and support to those who want to do the same. Instead, they get slammed for trying to make non-breastfeeding mothers feel bad about themselves or dismissed as irrelevant. Some media outlets seem to take it as an opportunity to pit mother against mother, instead of simply celebrating this wonderful ability of mothers to nourish their young ("TV3 breastfeeding sparks reaction", August 6th).

Why does this week get taken away from us? If we were talking about World Marathon Week, it wouldn’t be all about the people who can’t or don’t run marathons, would it?
