An EU without the UK?

Sir, – John Bruton states that the British people voted to stay in the EU in 1975 ("We must prepare for the possibility of an EU without the UK", Opinion & Analysis, September 14th). They did not do any such thing. They voted in 1975 to remain in the European Economic Community which, if we can remember it, was a totally different thing.

The crude fact is that the people of the United Kingdom have not had the opportunity to vote on what is now the European Union since 1975. Observing the shambles that the EU has become, whether it be the euro zone, the treatment of Greece and other countries by Germany, or Angela Merkel’s recent madness regarding uncontrolled immigration, I have no confidence that the people of the United Kingdom will vote to remain in the EU. – Yours, etc,
