Madam, - Recent media interest in the GAA's new task force on alcohol abuse prompts a puzzling question: how did Ireland's premier sporting organisation come to own the largest chain of licensed premises in the country, with more than 100 outlets and a group turnover estimated at €190 million? With numbers like these, the loss of a brewer's sponsorship probably would not hurt too much.

It is paradoxical, however, that the association dedicated to the welfare of our youth is itself dependent on alcohol revenues for its survival. - Yours, etc.,
