Sir, – There is a widespread tendency in this country, and among anti-Brexit people in the UK, to blame all Britain’s economic woes on Brexit. Andy Burnham did as much in his first session of prime ministerial questions.
However, a comparison of the economic performance of the UK relative to a similar-sized EU economy, France, which stayed inside the Single Market and the Customs Union, appears to counter that line of argument. The UK’s growth (predicted at an annual 1.3-1.4 per cent) is far stronger than France (no growth at all, or even possible recession), and the UK unemployment rate is almost half that of France.
The German economic performance is almost as bad as France. Italy is a little better but nowhere as strong as the UK.
If Brexit is having such a negative drag on the British economy, then why are the large EU economies not performing as well as post-Brexit Britain?
