Sir, – Uisce Éireann has announced an extension of the existing hosepipe ban and 13 counties will be affected.
Since the previous ban was announced car washes have been in constant operation, football, golf and other playing fields are being watered and any amount of water is regularly leaking down the roads.
Surely water restrictions should apply equally?
I see no need for water to be wasted on car washing or on sports fields.

Also, in view of ongoing climate change resulting in flooding last winter/spring and current drought conditions, perhaps the Government and Uisce Éireann should address the urgent requirement for more raw water storage capacity and additional water treatment facilities.
The long proposed but as yet undelivered plan to pump water from the Shannon will, if it ever happens, be insufficient to meet the ever increasing domestic, commercial and industrial requirements and, of course, ongoing climate change surprises.
Provision of additional reservoir(s) is a matter that can be very easily delivered by Government using State lands and existing financial and engineering resources.
