Coverage of women in sport is still way below par

RTÉ has a particular duty to provide fair coverage

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I agree with Regina McKeon (Letters, May 5th) regarding coverage of women’s sport in the media. Practically all TV, radio and newspaper coverage of sport focuses only on men’s sport.

Why are all TV and radio stations at the weekend endlessly covering only men’s football, hurling, soccer, etc? Do women not play these sports too?

Why is there so little TV, newspaper and radio coverage of sport featuring women in general? Why are there so few women journalists covering sport?

Most importantly, RTÉ is publicly funded and should therefore provide fair coverage of women and men in all sports.

Equality means equal funding, facilities, coaching, committee representation, prizes and media coverage for all participants in sport. There is a long way to go. – Yours, etc,

Helen Lambkin,

Goatstown,
