Another memorable bike trip up St Patrick’s Hill in Cork

Heavier than the Honda 50

Sir, – I was fascinated to read Sean Fleming’s memory (Letters, March 27th) of driving his Honda 50 to the top of St Patrick’s Hill in Cork with a pillion passenger.

I achieved the same feat around 1968 on my 1965 Lambretta Li150. I drove that scooter for about 33 years thanks largely to the expertise with bikes of my dad. I don’t think I had a passenger on the trip in question but I recall having to change down to first gear as I neared the summit.

Although it had a bigger engine than the Honda 50, it was a much heavier machine. I was relieved when I reached the top. It was one of many adventures with that bike. – Yours, etc,
