Public transport has worse safety threats than pets

Sir, - Considering the large number of dogs out for walks with their owners, I would be astonished if most law abiding citizens would be “enraged” by the possibility dogs and cats might be allowed on public transport, as stated in Jim Franey’s letter, (March 3rd).

Having shared my whole life with dogs, I resent the implication such ownership implies safety, chaos and allergy issues. On the continent where pets are regularly allowed on public transport, I have yet to witness such problems.

However, while having travelled in trains, boats and planes, I have had to put up with some appalling behaviour on the part of children, ignored by parents who seem to expect other passengers to smile benignly on the little darlings.

I am not allergic to animals, neither do I know anybody who is, but I have a growing allergy to the increasing antisocial behaviour, damaged to property, chaos and, in some cases, violence on public transport as witnessed on various occasions - which is be a far more serious threat to safety than any cat or dog. - Yours, etc,
