Sir, – I am writing in response to Darragh Geraghty’s excellent piece on the top 10 video games of 2023 (“The 10 best video games of 2023, from big-budget releases to unexpected indie gems”, Culture, December 18th).
The list included God of War: Ragnorak (and the website’s picture focused on this), which was actually released in 2022 and was both one of 2022′s best-selling games and most eagerly awaited blockbusters. I dare say that similarly impactful movie blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick or the new Avatar release wouldn’t have been mistaken for coming out in 2023.
I’m pointing this out because it is emblematic of The Irish Times’s seeming attitude to one the most dynamic areas of global culture today. The paper lacks a regular section reviewing new releases (as it does with films) and a quick perusal of the culture page of the website doesn’t include Mr Geraghty’s otherwise excellent article nor is there a video games section to review the paper’s articles in the area.
Print media has a reputation for being outdated enough without these major misses. – Yours, etc,
