Stormont and the DUP

Salaries, calendars and offers

Sir, – The easiest way to get the dissenters back working in Stormont would be for the UK government to pass legislation to stop the salaries of those who refuse to attend the institutions to which they have been elected.

Naturally, in the interests of balance, the same removal of pay should also apply to MPs, including those from Northern Ireland, who refuse to attend the UK parliament.

The last time MLAs had their pay stopped, they scooted back into Stormont pretty rapidly.

The pocket may, once again, prove to be more powerful than the principles of the protesters. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The DUP refuse to be “calendar” driven.

Given that their calendar goes back only 6,000 years, who knows what this means.

But the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland are “calendar” driven and have watched social, health and public services deteriorate month by month as this small band of prevaricators indulge in a grossly inflated view of their importance. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The DUP’s claim that their concerns over the Windsor Accord have not been fully dealt with is a smokescreen. Viktor Orbán has extracted €30.2 billion from the EU.

Are the DUP trying to extract even more than the £3.3 billion currently on offer from Westminster? – Yours, etc,
