Health expenditure

Out of control

Sir, – Cliff Taylor, in commenting on the Apple tax case (Opinion & Analysis, November 10th), has found a striking way of presenting the out-of-control expenditure in our public health system. In 2016 the tax at issue would have paid for one year’s health spending. It would now pay less than 60 per cent of the health budget for 2024. Put another way, public health expenditure has increased by about two-thirds over a period of eight years.

I suppose a spot of cost-benefit analysis would be out of the question? – Yours, etc,

PAT O’BRIEN,

Dublin 6.
