Sir, – Now that Frank McNally has declared Seán Lemass “to be Ireland’s greatest taoiseach”, it would be interesting to know what parameters, opinion polls or surveys he used in arriving at this assumption (An Irishman’s Diary, October 18th).
Does a trend graph of taoiseach rankings from greatest to average to least exist?
Social, cultural, and economic changes develop over time and, coupled with increasing geopolitical issues, new skills and expertise are essential in the leadership of our country. Making a comparative statement on a taoiseach’s performance outside of the context of the period spent in office could be merited or undeserved. – Yours, etc,
