Parliamentary poet laureate

Sir, – We refer to the article of September 6th relating to the possible appointment of a parliamentary poet laureate (“Paul Muldoon proposed as parliamentary poet laureate”, News, September 6th).

By way of clarification, Poetry Ireland wishes to make it clear that if a decision is made by the Oireachtas to appoint a parliamentary poet laureate, there is a wide range of outstanding candidates who would be suitable and could be considered for the position. If asked by the Oireachtas to do so, Poetry Ireland would be happy to assist in any open and transparent selection process. – Yours, etc,
