Loud music in pubs and restaurants

Pipe down

A chara, – I agree wholeheartedly with Paul Whelan’s remarks (Letters, June 2nd) but not just for the people outside pubs subjected to excessive noise. Too many times have I gone into a restaurant or pub with friends to have a catch-up or chat, and we end up having to shout at each other over music. If someone is playing live, they should not need a microphone and amplifier with the space of most Irish pubs, or if they do need one, it shouldn’t be turned up beyond 50 per cent. If the establishment is playing music, it is my view that no one should have to raise their voice to order.

I’m not yet 30, but want to make sure I make it there without hearing damage, while still being able to socialise beyond my own home. – Yours, etc,
