Sir, – Miriam Lord wonders if the current Taoiseach still secretly harbours resignation plans (“Could Leo do a Jacinda and walk away?”, News, June 3rd).
Judging by the ongoing exodus of Fine Gael TDs, Leo Varadkar’s statement in 2015 would appear to have served as a clarion call, encouraging his party colleagues to reflect that there may indeed be a life worth living beyond politics: “I don’t see myself in politics at 51. Whatever I do next it will be different, not politics.”
He backtracked on this in 2018. “I can assure you I’ll be around for as long as the people want me.”
Recent polls showing his party 16 points below its 2011 electoral success might suggest that the people do want an alternative. And why wait around to suffer the indignity of the traditional heave-ho?
