Energy bills and pensioners

Keeping warm

Sir, – I have great sympathy for the 100-year-old lady who got an electricity bill for €957 for a two-month period (News, March 2nd). I am only 90 but my latest two-month gas bill from Electric Ireland is for €1,642 and it gave me a nasty shock. My previous two-month bill was for €640. I’m thinking of turning myself into a corporate entity, as the private citizen is denied the advantages which Electric Ireland plans to pass on to the business sector.

The only consolation I derive from ultimately paying this exorbitant demand is that the Government, from its windfall tax, will have something to distribute to struggling pensioners who like to keep warm and enjoy the odd cup of tea. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL DARCY,

Dublin 18.
