Sir, – I had an appointment in Dublin city centre on Saturday evening and didn’t drive. When I got to the bus stop on Talbot Street at 7pm, a badly lit street that is notorious for antisocial behaviour, it was 38 minutes until the next bus was due. I began walking to Connolly Dart Station instead and in that five-minute journey, I had to witness a man threaten to stab another man in the neck with a wine bottle.
If politicians really want people to ditch their car, they need to make public transport and safety an urgent priority because current measures aren’t working.
Also, in case anyone suggests cycling instead, a bike would be lucky to survive one day in the city centre without being stolen, and that’s before getting into the many people physically unable to cycle. – Yours, etc,
FIONA DALY,
Clontarf,
Dublin 3.
